FRESHMAN YEAR UPDATES #1

Saturday, January 13, 2018

Technically this isn’t Freshman Year Updates #1, because I’ve already gone through fall quarter (whoops), but over break I decided that, in order to make blogging a consistent weekly thing, and in order to be able to remember all the things that are happening, I’m going to do something similar to my Senior Year Updates posts of last school year. Except this is going to be weekly, not monthly. So yay! You get a play-by-play.

If I sound kinda choppy and my flow’s off, that’s because I’m sleep-deprived and extremely tired. In fact, what I would very much like to do right now is collapse into bed. (I’m not going to, though; I don’t have enough time.)

Let’s see: what’s happened this week?
  • I came home on Sunday to a lot of gray and dreariness and woke up on Monday and Tuesday to rain. Like, lots of it. I tried to go for a run on Monday morning and, as I was running on the sidewalk, a car drove by and hit that giant stream/puddle thing that always forms between the curb and the street. Result? A massive wave ensues, Rachel gets soaked (literally soaked), and has to go home to take a shower. (Ironic, eh? I get sprayed with water, and therefore have to go clean myself off with more water.)
    • It got better the rest of the week, though, so that was good.
  • I started taking Spanish again after over a year of not taking it. I fully expected to loathe it, but I actually quite enjoy it--it’s interesting, and my teachers are super nice. The only downside is that the class is taught entirely in Spanish, which means I have to actively listen during all hour- and hour-and-a-half class sessions.
  • I started looking into a bunch of job opportunities and school activities. Being part of an internship where a) everyone else is at a better school than I am, and b) doing a lot more than I am has made me realize that I want to do more with my time. So I revamped my resume, wrote a cover letter, and am currently submitting applications. I’ll let you know what happens in the upcoming weeks, but we’ll see what pans out and what doesn’t.
  • This past week has been super busy in regards to my internship with Cath in College, mostly because we’re in the process of employing a weeklong digital “event” that we’re running to build up support for the premiere of Senior Year Season Two. For the past several weeks, we’ve been brainstorming and planning a seven-video series (a video a day), along with a Scavenger Hunt that involves CiC trivia, many (MANY) Google Forms, and mucho complications. It’s fun and cool and awesome to be part of an innovative team, but it’s also hard work (and I love it).
  • Today I attended a three-hour-long writing intensive that began at nine a.m., followed by a two-hour beginning children’s book writing class that I’ve been attending once a month. Technically, I should’ve stayed for two more hours after that, because there was a chapter meeting and a speaker, but, like, I had class every single day for the past five days, so I dipped early.
    • Don’t get me wrong, though--I really like learning about crafting narrative and such. It’s just kind of hard when a) you don’t have that much time to focus on writing, b) you’re the youngest one in the room by a lot, and c) you’re tired because you were up till 3 a.m. revamping your resume and had to travel eight miles by public transportation to get to the place. Most of that part is my fault, though, lol.
  • I added five hundred words to my manuscript per day for five days this week. Next week, I’m going to try to extend that to six days, but we’ll see how I’m feeling.

It’s honestly great to be back. Doing nothing was fun and all, but I missed making my daily to-do lists, assigning myself things to do, learning about stuff, and being able to talk to random people whenever I want. This quarter’s going to be insanely busy, but now that I’ve got the hang of the campus, my habits, and my class schedule, I think it’s going to be a good, wonderfully productive one. (I hope, lol.)

Have a lovely week two!

Rachel

  2. UM WHAT. Getting splashed by a puddle while you were trying to run? I can't believe that actually happens. The writing intensive sounds awesome. And exploring campus too. I wish my campus had more things like that to do! Looking forward to seeing more updates.

  3. Your internship sounds amazing, Rachel! I also agree with actively listening in Spanish— it’s such a fun language, but when the teacher spits rapid fire about the news and wants us to input in, it’s difficult. I hope your job applications go through, Rachel!!!

  4. MANNNNN you are busy!!! But it also seems like the busyness is a blessing right now, that it's keeping you occupied in the best way, and that you are being equipped with endurance, positivity, and thoroughness. <33333 hugggs
