TIME TO LIVE [college vlog]

Sunday, September 24, 2017

This past week, I gave myself permission to stop thinking about the future and to just live in the moment.

There’s a danger to this, which is why I haven’t done it that much before. For one, foresight is actually quite helpful. For another, you can’t just live your entire life “being in the moment.” If you do that, then you have a whole lot of random moments, but no real narrative to your life.

This summer, I wrote a lot, read a lot, and spent a lot of time in my own head. It was fantastic, and I’m so thankful I had the time and energy and willpower to do so.

However, since Sunday, I haven’t added a word to my first draft. I haven’t really thought about my characters. I read a few words of Prince Caspian, but I couldn’t concentrate on it, because I was too focused on the story that was playing right before my eyes.

While my characters’ stories are important to me, mine is of greater importance. They’re fictional; I made them up in my head. I’m real. I’m here. If I sacrifice my life for theirs, I’m sacrificing theirs as well, because they come from my own experiences, imagination, and growth.

My characters’ stories aren’t over; they’re on hiatus, because in order to write theirs well, I have to write my own.

In case you don’t know, I’ll be vlogging throughout college. This is part of my story:
