'THE BLOOD RACE' BLOG TOUR + GIVEAWAY

Here’s the deal:

My friend K.A. Emmons is releasing a book on August 1st! It’s called The Blood Race, and it’s about people with special abilities who are training to save the world.

Read the official excerpt below:

Born with unexplainable abilities he struggles to control, college student Ion tries desperately to integrate into his new school and finally put his dark past behind him. But after making a serious enemy, which leads to an accidental rendezvous with the mysterious old man next door— and his hauntingly beautiful but troubled young protégée Hawk, Ion realizes his life will never be normal again.
Late one evening, Hawk drags him by the hand into a closet-turned-rabbit-hole to an extra dimension, and Ion finds himself stumbling involuntarily into a secret society of training for “anomalies,” teenagers with a special set of abilities. Just like him.
As they train to become Protectors of future Earth, battling each other as well as their own demons, both Ion and Hawk begin to realize that they are far more alike than they realized. Unsettlingly so.
When the Dimension is shaken by an unthinkable betrayal, will an ancient prophecy bring Hawk and Ion together—or will a deadly threat hidden in plain sight cost them both their powers… and their lives?
About Kate:

When she’s not hermiting away in her colorfully-painted home office writing her next science fiction, passionate story-teller and adventurer Kate Emmons is probably on the road for a surf or hiking trip, listening to vinyls, or going for a power run. Emmons lives in the often-snowy hills of rugged Vermont with her husband and dog named Rocket.

Kate has graciously allowed me to post an excerpt of her story as part of her blog tour, as well as hold a giveaway for an eBook copy of The Blood Race!

Here’s the very beginning of the story:

They said I was born with the markings: black stains that wrapped my upper arms like mourning bands. But no one had witnessed my birth—I would never know if that was true. I was the dark horse, the unlabeled package, the unwanted child thrown to the back of the classroom to feed and fester in the shadows.
My name was spoken in whispers, in shadows, in the places where the fearful gathered to chant. I was the foundling, the mystery, the curse. I was different, they said. The markings were an omen; the devil lived inside me.
I couldn’t understand what he meant when his gentle voice told me he had been looking for me, watching since I was a child. The words came out of his mouth like velvet to touch my bruised flesh. I shook beneath their weight; I avoided his bright sky eyes. His voice was like a mother’s, and his face was like the sun. His skin was satin, diamonds, gold, everything from which I’d been restrained. He told me that I was like the dawn. When I asked what he meant, he told me that heaven and earth existed between a soul torn in two. A sunrise marred by the fruits of the world as it was, and a sunset marked by all that it could become. One, he said, that would mark the beginning of a harvest, and another that would mark its culmination.
“How can this be?” I asked. “I don’t even know who I am. Where I’ve come from.”
“I know who you are,” he told me. “I designed you.”
“Who are you?”
“Does it matter?”
“It does,” I replied. “It does to me—I have to know if I can trust you.”
“Trust is earned, dear one.”
“I don’t understand.”
“I’m a protector of that which is to come,” he replied.
“That which is to come, sir?”
“I am not ‘sir’; I am your teacher,” he said. “You have a greater mission than I.”
I stared at him through the shafts of early morning sun, searching for something behind the blue in his eyes. “A mission?”
He looked at me, then nodded. “To find the other half of who you are.”

Cool, isn’t it?
