RACHEL'S SUMMER BUCKET LIST 2016

Summer is the best season ever. Despite the truly awful heat (although the time it gets really bad is in September/October here in California), 1. there's no school, 2. there's no school, and 3. IT'S TIME TO TRAVEL!!

I actually enjoy traveling (making playlists! eating junk food! yay!), and I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm going to like it a lot better as I get older.

But anyway, this is my summer bucket list, which encompasses everything from summer reading lists to camps to travel plans (and plus I have an urgent question for you all...so read on)!

STUFF I WANT TO DO

1. FIND NEW CLOTHES / GO THRIFTING

I'm currently trying to figure out my style. This past year, my style was gym shorts, T-shirts, and socks and sneakers...but now I think I want to find something that's a little style-conscious but not super awkwardly fashion-conscious. My mom told me that I'm only young once, so I might as well look good, and plus, I'm getting a little bit tired of gym shorts and ugly long striped socks (which are currently my trademarks). So I think I'm going to go thrifting! (That'll be a whole adventure in itself.) I honestly just like thrifting because it's cheap. I hate spending money. And plus...college is SO PRICEY (Let's be real; I'd rather have an education than clothes).

2. MOVE BEDROOMS / REDECORATE

My bedroom is kind of...awkward. It's a U-shape, because it has closet space sticking out into the room itself (I can't really explain it, but it's awkward, trust me), and even though it has bookshelves and a window seat, I think it's time for a change. So I want to switch bedrooms this summer. Or, at the very least, redecorate.

I've never truly redecorated because I'm kind of lazy when it comes to aesthetics, but now I realize that I'll probably enjoy working hard at making it look good (because, y'know, it's a creative endeavor). So that's probably going to happen. I don't know. We'll see.

3. COOK ONE DISH FROM A DIFFERENT COUNTRY (PERU / COSTA RICA?)

My Spanish class is doing presentations on different countries, and while I'm not a huge fan of the Spanish language itself (the grammar's weird), the food looks AMAZING. There's so much meat and so many spices and things and the pictures all look super tasty and colorful. So I think I'll set a goal for myself to try to cook at least one dish from Peru. Because Peruvian food looks good. (Seriously, Google it.)

Gotta love me some Fresh Prince gifs...

4. GO TO LA AND EAT AT TRENDY PLACES

I live about an hour away from Los Angeles, and while that's not exactly close, it's still fairly accessible, especially if I'm going there earlier in the morning. There are a bunch of super trendy, super LA kind of restaurants/shops there, and while I'm not a trendy person by any means, it'd be nice to go there at least once and see what the hype is all about.

5. SUMMER READING LIST

I WANT TO READ! Last year, I made a list of twenty "classic" books and movies for myself, and I only ended up reading/watching a couple of them. This year, I'm setting myself more reasonable goals: I chose five books that I'd like to read. I might post about them if I like or hate them enough, but anyway, here's the list:

1. Catch-22
2. Slaughterhouse Five
3. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
4. The Bell Jar
5. The Jungle

I'm going to be reading more, because I'll have more time for it, and I'm trying to make an active effort to read more nonfiction/high class literature. Currently, I'm reading A Streetcar Named Desire in my Language Arts class, and I really, really enjoy it. 10/10 would recommend. You should read it.

6. NEW HAIR!!

I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WANT TO DO TO MY HAIR, BUT I KNOW I WANT TO DO SOMETHING TO IT! I wanted to dye it white, like in this photo, but my mom didn't think it was advisable. I think she's afraid something like this is going to happen, except with hair dye...

I still kind of want to do it, though, but should I play it safe? Go wild? Let me know what you think!

7. BLOG MORE

This is a given, isn't it?

STUFF I'M GOING TO DO

1. FILM CAMP IN JUNE!

While I was in a funk, I asked my dad to sign me up for film camp at Biola University! Towards the end of June (I think the camp runs from the 20th to the 24th), I'm going to be going there and meeting people and making movies! I'm actually super, super excited, and I'm hoping/praying that it'll be a good experience.

2. CZECH REPUBLIC/LONDON IN JUNE/JULY!

My church puts on a yearly English camp every summer in Czech Republic (we have missionaries there who run it), so this year, my family is part of the Czech Missions team! We're going to help teach English camp, hold workshops, do culture talks about American life, and build relationships so we can share the Gospel. I'm INSANELY excited, and I have a feeling it's going to change my life for the better.

We'll be in Czech for two weeks, and then we're going to hop a plane and go to London for vacation (isn't it funny how in Europe you can just hop on a plane and go to a different country, whereas in the U.S. you hop around states?). My dad bought us tickets to see The Taming of the Shrew at the replica Globe Theater. (And I think we're going to Stratford-upon-Avon--which is Shakespeare's birthplace--and Stonehenge, and eat fish and chips. I CANNOT CONTAIN MY EXCITEMENT. YOU HAVE ZERO IDEA.)

But honestly, I'm so so thankful that my family can do these kinds of things, and even if you can't come along (I wish I could pack you all in my suitcase), I think I'm going to have wifi in both Czech and London, so I'll post as often as I can (but in the meantime I'm going to have some prewritten posts and things for when I can't get to my blog).

GAHHH THIS MAKES ME SO EXCITED.

3. TENNIS CAMP IN JULY/AUGUST!

I'm a high school tennis player, and every year, the tennis program at my school hosts a tennis camp for all returning/potential tennis players. It typically runs from 6 to 9 in the morning, but I usually have fun with all my teammates (and potential teammates). We go on team bonding trips, and because I--and some of my friends--are able to drive, I have a feeling we're going to go to more places this year once I get back from Europe.

4. COLLEGE VISITS!

I'M GOING TO BE A SENIOR NEXT YEAR.

WHAT.

IS.

LIFE.

I cannot believe I'm going to be in twelfth grade. TWELFTH GRADE! When I was younger, I always compared my grade number to twelfth grade, and I honestly didn't think that I would ever get to this point in my life.

But I am.

oh. my. holy. potato. crackers.

And twelfth grade means college applications, last-minute internships, and college visits. Lots and lots of college visits.

At the moment, realistically, I'm looking at Wheaton College (which is my mom's alma mater, and I LOVED it when I visited it during spring break--it's a train ride from Chicago!!), and any/all the UCs (University of California--like UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, etc). I'm planning on visiting some of the UCs this summer, so I'm excited for that!

--

So yeah. That's my summer bucket list. A while ago I had a huge plan for what I was going to do with this blog over the summer, but I think I'm just going to play it by ear this time around. Hopefully I'll make more videos / do more things / take more pictures / do more photoshoots / make more lists / write more articles, so I'm genuinely excited.

what are you doing this summer?? how are you doing? WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY HAIR? PLEASE COMMENT BELOW!!
